The Oz Principle

The Oz Principle: Getting Results Through Individual and Organizational Accountability is a foundational work on workplace accountability co-authored by Roger Connors and Tom Smith, first published in 1994 and updated in subsequent editions. The book uses L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz as an extended metaphor to illustrate how individuals and organizations can move from victimization to accountability and achieve breakthrough results.

The central thesis is that accountability—defined as "a personal choice to rise above one's circumstances and demonstrate the ownership necessary for achieving desired results"—is the single most important factor in organizational and personal success. The book introduces the distinction between operating "Below The Line" (in the victim cycle of blame, denial, wait-and-see, and confusion) versus "Above The Line" (taking ownership through the Steps To Accountability).

The Steps To Accountability form the book's core framework:

  1. See It – Acknowledge reality, seek feedback, and recognize the full truth of a situation

  2. Own It – Accept responsibility for circumstances and one's role in them

  3. Solve It – Persistently find solutions rather than dwelling on problems

  4. Do It – Follow through with committed action to achieve results

Drawing from the Oz characters—the Scarecrow seeking a brain, the Tin Man seeking a heart, and the Lion seeking courage—the book demonstrates that the power to achieve results has been within us all along. Dorothy's journey represents the universal path from victimhood to accountability.
